This guide provides business leaders with information and guidelines for establishing a plan and programs to fight against family violence and child abuse, both within the community and within the workplace.
Abstract
The material focuses on the implementation of the CEO Challenge: Partners Against Violence, which was initiated by the Polaroid Corporation. Under this program, companies "adopt" a shelter or a community service agency that is working to protect and assist women victims and family victims. The "adoption" is a "two-way street," since the shelter or agency provides education and consultation to the company on workplace policies and guidelines for dealing with battered women. The company uses its resources to help victims of domestic violence. Polaroid Corporation, for example, provides resources and personnel for free job training to 50 shelter women each year. Assistance may include financial contributions from the business to the agency, in-kind contributions, and the provision of expertise and personnel for specific projects such as fundraising and long- range planning. This guide provides examples of organizations with which businesses can "partner" and suggests steps a business can take to initiate a partnership. Suggestions are also provided for organizing several businesses to address family violence. Suggestions for projects are presented as well, followed by a section on tools and sample materials that can be used in the effort.
