Presentations at a conference by experts in medicine and law dealt with issues of protecting the rights of the persons with AIDS, protecting society from HIV transmission, determining appropriate sentences for a criminal defendant with AIDS, and dealing with the fears of court personnel about contact with persons with AIDS in the courtroom as well as discrimination in housing, schools, and the workplace.
Abstract
Other topics covered in this special issue include the need for aggressive judicial leadership in AIDS policy issues, medical information about the AIDS virus and the spectrum of HIV disease, impact of AIDS on family law, and problems of testing for HIV. A plan for court management of felony drug cases and reports from the National Conferences of State Trial Judges, Special Court Judges, Appellate Judges, Administrative Law Judges, and lawyers are presented. Guidelines for setting up an AIDS education program similar to the California experience is included as are the American Bar Association (ABA) criminal justice section guidelines regarding AIDS and interviews with people with AIDS.
