THIS BOOKLET PRESENTS THE TEXTS OF SEVEN ADDRESSES GIVEN BY POLICE OFFICERS, MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, AND BRITISH MAGISTRATES, DURING A SEMINAR ON THE GROWING PROBLEM OF CRIME IN GREAT BRITAIN.
Abstract
THE SPEAKERS, BROUGHT TOGETHER UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE POLICE FEDERATION OF ENGLAND AND WALES, DISCUSS A NUMBER OF TOPICS OF MAJOR CONCERN TO POLICE OFFICERS. AMONG THE ISSUES EXAMINED ARE THE RAPID INCREASES IN THE BRITISH CRIME RATE, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EXISTING CRIMINAL LEGISLATION, THE EXISTING LAWS RELATING TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS, THE TREND TOWARD A MORE LENIENT AND REHABILITATIVE APPROACH TO CRIMINALS, AND THE EFFECT OF CURRENT PUBLIC ATTITUDES ON LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE SPEAKERS PROVIDE INSIGHTS ON THESE PROBLEMS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE POLICE, THE GOVERNMENT, AND THE JUDICIARY.
