This analysis of violence against women argues that it functions as a worldwide instrument of control and requires analysis and responses at both the individual and societal levels.

Abstract

This violence includes physical, psychological, sexual, and societal abuse and includes assault, murder, incest, forced motherhood, rape, slavery, sexual objectification, pornography, sexual harassment, and possibly other forms of abuse. Violence aims to keep women powerless and acquiescent to the patriarchal system that operates throughout the world. Domestic violence is also perpetuated through all the institutions, customs, mores, and cultural expectations that contribute to the socialization of women. This process also blames the victim for the violence and results in further oppression. Therefore, professionals must recognize that family violence is a political issue and must educate decisionmakers about the need for a commitment to respond to the issue. 6 references.
