Annotation

This article examines the components of professionalism in correctional training programs and in trainers.

Abstract

Characteristics of professionalism in training include a program based on assessed needs, adequate documentation, measurable performance objectives that are linked to a job task analysis, and consistency of learning domains across objectives and content. Additional characteristics include detailed lesson plans, accurate training and attendance records, outlines, sequenced training modules, and rigorous evaluation of training effectiveness. Professionalism of the trainer involves licensing or certification, specialized knowledge, professional standards and peer review, loyalty to the profession, willingness to challenge authority, discretion in the area of expertise, teamwork, and self-critical and nondefensive attitudes. 22 references.
