Written for children from the perspective of Joe, a homeless child, this narrative describes the events that led to homelessness for a single-parent family and the feelings and experiences of the mother and children during their efforts to find employment and shelter.
Abstract
The mother had a day job and also delivered newspapers with her children from their van. The family was evicted from its housing complex when the landlord decided to build condominiums. After the van was destroyed in an accident, the family stayed at a hotel and then at a free shelter. A case manager attempted to find an apartment for the family, while the mother searched unsuccessfully for a job and the family continued to deliver newspapers. They encountered other homeless people and continued their efforts to find permanent housing and employment. Illustrations
