DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AT 24 AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES ARE SURVEYED.
Abstract
ALL 24 INSTITUTIONS OFFERING CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS AT THE DOCTORAL LEVEL WERE SURVEYED BY MEANS OF CATALOG COMPARISON AND A QUESTIONNAIRE. THE CATALOG DATA INDICATE THAT 23 OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS REQUIRE THE STUDENTS TO BE ENROLLED AS DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY CANDIDATES, 15 OF THE UNIVERSITIES ARE PUBLICLY FUNDED, 7 UNIVERSITIES AUTHORIZE A DOCTORAL DEGREE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, WHILE THE OTHER UNIVERSITIES ACCOMMODATE THE PROGRAM IN RELATED DEPARTMENTS (E.G., SOCIOLOGY), AND AN AVERAGE OF 13.5 CRIMINAL JUSTICE COURSE TITLES WERE OFFERED PER UNIVERSITY. RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE, WHICH WAS RETURNED BY 21 INSTITUTIONS, SHOW THAT 57 PERCENT OF THOSE ENROLLED ARE FULL-TIME MAJORS, AND THE ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME FACULTY WILL INCREASE BETWEEN 1979 AND 1981. A TOTAL OF SIX NEW DOCTORAL PROGRAMS ARE PLANNED TO BEGIN BETWEEN 1979 AND 1984. BASED UPON THE FINDINGS, SEVERAL CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE. INCREASED FOCUS ON SKILLS NEEDED IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT, MANAGEMENT, AND RESEARCH, IS REQUIRED AS IS CONSOLIDATION OF GRADUATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE COURSES. UNIFORM CRIMINAL JUSTICE CORE-COURSE REQUIREMENTS SHOULD BE DRAWN UP, AND THE 15 DIFFERENT COLLEGE DEPARTMENTS THAT OFFER THE PROGRAMS SHOULD BE CONDENSED AND CONSOLIDATED. AN AGREEMENT ON WHETHER CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION IS A CRIMINOLOGY SPECIALITY, A DIVISION OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES, OR AN OFFERING OF THE SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SHOULD BE ARRIVED AT. FINALLY, CONTINUED ANALYSIS OF FACULTY AND STUDENTS AND THE ROLE OF BUDGETARY CONSIDERATIONS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS IS NEEDED. THE DISSERTATION CONTAINS AN EXTENSIVE REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY. COPIES OF THE COVER LETTERS, THE QUESTIONNAIRE, A LIST OF COLLEGES, AND A LIST OF THE 50 STATES AND U.S. POSSESSIONS COVERED BY 10 REGIONAL LEAA OFFICES ARE APPENDED. (SAJ)
