SOME OF THE LATEST LAW REFORMS IN VARIOUS WESTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE SURVEYED IN THIS BRIEF STUDY SPONSORED BY THE UNITED NATIONS CRIME PREVENTION AND OFFENDER TREATMENT INSTITUTE.
Abstract
IN BELGIUM, NEW PROVISIONS FOR CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT DETECTION, REPORTING, AND REMEDIES, INCLUDING SYSTEMATIC MONITORING OF ALL REGISTERED CASES, HAVE BEEN LEGISLATED. DENMARK ABOLISHED CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN 1978. THE LATEST LAW REFORMS IN SPAIN INCLUDE DECRIMINALIZATION OF ADULTERY (FOR WOMEN) AND MODIFICATIONS TO THE RIGHT OF ASSEMBLY AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND ASSOCIATION LAWS. IN FRANCE, NEW LAWS WERE PASSED ON HOMOSEXUALITY, THE LEGAL DEFINITION OF RAPE, MAXIMUM SECURITY MEASURES FOR DANGEROUS CRIMINALS, AND PROHIBITION OF COMMERCIAL EXPLOITATION OF THEIR CRIME BY CONVICTED OFFENDERS. GREECE PASSED STRICTER LAWS (UP TO THE DEATH PENALTY) FOR TERRORISTS. ITALY ALSO TIGHTENED ITS ANTITERRORIST LAWS (JUST SHORT OF THE DEATH PENALTY), AND DECRIMINALIZED ABORTION UP TO THE THIRD MONTH OF PREGNANCY. THE NETHERLANDS REFORMED WHITE-COLLAR CRIME LAWS. SWEDEN ALMOST TOTALLY ABOLISHED INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS, REPLACING IT WITH SUCH ALTERNATIVES AS SUPERVISED LIBERTY AND A MINIMALLY RESTRICTIVE PROBATION FORM. IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (SCOTLAND), SUSPECT IDENTIFICATION LAWS IN POLICE LINEUPS OR IN COURT BY WITNESSES WERE CHANGED TO REQUIRE THE PRESENCE OF AN ATTORNEY FOR THE SUSPECT OR DEFENDANT SUBJECTED TO THIS CONFRONTATION. --IN SPANISH.
