Two studies provide data on changes in the volume of foster care for 1933-1943 and on juvenile court activities for 1943.
Abstract
The most recent Federal census of dependent and neglected children receiving foster care from public and private agencies was taken in 1933. Although a similar census was not undertaken in 1943, 27 States and the District of Columbia, representing nearly 65 percent of the population of the United States under 21 years of age, were able to furnish data on dependent and neglected children in foster care served by public and private agencies. Data are provided on the number of children served in foster care by public agencies and on the type of care (foster family care and institutional care). The juvenile court statistics pertain to the cases processed by 399 juvenile courts that reported data in 1943. Data cover the number of cases processed by State, source of referral to the court, place of detention, and case disposition. The report also discusses the limitations of juvenile court statistics and ways to improve such statistics. 7 tables.
