The organization and operation of a chaplain/volunteer program in the Canadian Penitentiary Service are described.
Abstract
The organization model is intended as a tool and a checklist to assist chaplains and other coordinators in setting up efficient and effective volunteer programs. The models consists of the following steps: goals, objectives, plan, job design, recruitment, interviewing, orientation, placement, training, sustenance, and evaluation. Each aspect of the models is discussed in detail. Recruiting techniques are described, and the volunteer training process discussed consists of an orientation phase and inservice training oriented toward the specific task assigned. The section on the sustenance of the volunteer suggests ways to reduce volunteer attrition by preventing burnout and by helping volunteers to sustain interest in and commitment to their tasks. Individual chaplain/volunteer programs in the Canadian Penitentiary Service are described. A bibliography of about 40 references is provided.
