BACKGROUNDS AND CAREER PATTERNS OF STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES WHO SAT ON THE COURTS DURING THE PERIOD 1961-1968.
Abstract
THE SURVEY OF STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES SHOWS THEM TO BE MAINLY RURAL OR SMALL TOWN NATIVES OF THEIR HOME STATE. THEY ARE PREDOMINANTLY PROTESTANT AND GENERALLY IN THEIR LATE 50S AND 60S. THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS DEMOCRATS BELOW THE MASON-DIXON LINE, BUT HAVE MIXED PARTISAN AFFILIATIONS ABOVE IT. ALMOST ALL HAVE LEGAL DEGREES. MOST JUSTICES BEGAN THEIR CAREERS WITH PROSECUTORIAL OR LEGISLATIVE SERVICE AND MOVED TO A TRIAL JUDGESHIP. FROM A TRIAL JUDGE'S POSITION, MOST WERE ELEVATED DIRECTLY TO THE STATE SUPREME COURT.
