This report describes the characteristics of inmates in State correctional institutions in New York on December 31, 1992 and provides comparative data for previous years starting in 1985.
Abstract
A total of 61,376 inmates were in the custody of the Department of Correctional Services at the end of 1992, an increase of 27,229 inmates since 1985. Thirty-three percent of the inmates were confined in maximum security prisons at the end of 1992, compared to 51 percent at the end of 1985. Drug offenders increased from 13 percent of the inmate population in 1985 to 35 percent at the end of 1992. At the end of 1992, a total of 35,273 inmates were second or persistent felony offenders, compared to 16,820 at the end of 1985. Female offenders increased from 1,061 in 1985 to 3,500 in 1992.
