DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY OF 303 MALES INDICTED FOR HOMICIDE IN MASSACHUSETTS FROM 1965 TO 1969, SHOWING SIGNIFICANT CORRELATIONS.
Abstract
UNLIKE PSYCHOLOGICAL VARIABLES, THE AUTHOR STATES THAT STABLE DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO CHARACTERIZE MURDERERS. THE MEAN AGE AND EDUCATION LEVEL OF THOSE INDICTED WERE FOUND TO BE LOWER THAN THOSE OF THE GENERAL POPULATION. SIMILARLY, WHEN COMPARED TO THE GENERAL POPULATION, A GREATER PERCENTAGE OF THOSE IN THE STUDY WERE SINGLE, DIVORCED, OR SEPARATED. NEGROES WERE INDICTED AT A RATE OVER 12 TIMES THEIR POPULATION PERCENTAGES. ALSO, THOSE CONVICTED OF MURDER HAD A LOWER EDUCATION LEVEL THAN THOSE INDICTED BUT FOUND NOT GUILTY, ALTHOUGH NO DIFFERENCE WAS FOUND IN INTELLIGENCE.
