INDIVIDUAL CASE DATA ON PAROLEE CHARACTERISTICS, COLLECTED NATIONALLY IN 1975, 1976, AND 1977 AS PART OF THE FEDERALLY-FUNDED UNIFORM PAROLE REPORTS PROJECT, ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
DURING THE 3-YEAR PERIOD, 42 STATES, PUERTO RICO, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SUBMITTED DATA ON PAROLED OFFENDERS SENTENCED TO 1 YEAR OR MORE IN PRISON. STATES NOT INCLUDED IN THE ANALYSIS WERE CONNECTICUT, INDIANA, MARYLAND, LOUISIANA, OKLAHOMA, COLORADO, MONTANA, AND WASHINGTON. IN STATES REPORTING ON A SAMPLE OF THEIR PAROLE POPULATIONS, EACH REPORTED CASE WAS WEIGHTED BY THE INVERSE OF THE SAMPLING PERCENTAGE. WHEN STATES REPORTED DATA FOR LESS THAN 12 MONTHS IN 1977, EACH REPORTED CASE WAS WEIGHTED BY THE INVERSE OF THE PERCENTAGE OF THE YEAR COVERED. STATISTICAL TABLES AND EXPLANATORY NARRATIVE COVER FOUR MAJOR AREAS: (1) CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION ENTERING PAROLE (SEX, AGE, RACE, TIME SERVED, KNOWN PRIOR PRISON COMMITMENTS, PREVIOUS PAROLE VIOLATORS, AND PAROLE ENTRIES AS A PERCENTAGE OF PRISON RELEASES); (2) TIME SERVED IN PRISON BY NUMBER OF KNOWN PRIOR PRISON COMMITMENTS, CONTROLLING FOR COMMITMENT OFFENSE; (3) NEW CONVICTIONS FOR PERSONS RETURNED TO PRISON DURING THE 3 YEARS OF PAROLE SUPERVISION BY COMMITMENT OFFENSE; AND (4) 1977 PAROLE STATUS. A TABLE INDICATING THE 1-YEAR PAROLE STATUS OF PERSONS ENTERING PAROLE IN 1973, 1974, 1975, AND 1976 IS ALSO INCLUDED. APPENDIXES NOTE SOURCES OF DATA FOR NATIONAL TABLES AND CONTAIN DETAILED NATIONAL TABLES. (DEP)
