This report presents selected characteristics of the 76,171 inmates in California Department of Corrections' institutions on December 31, 1988.
Abstract
A chart shows the overall characteristics of the inmate population. This includes the percentage of inmates by type of offense (violent, property, drugs, other), the percentage of inmates by ethnic status (white, black, Mexican American, other), the number of inmates in various age groups, and the proportion in various commitment areas (Los Angeles County, other northern California areas, San Francisco Bay area, other southern California areas, and other California jurisdictions). Two tables indicate most serious offense by institution and by type of commitment, and another two tables show ethnic group by institution and type of commitment. A series of tables present age group by institution, percent of age group by institution, age group by type of commitment, and percent of age group by type of commitment. Area and county of commitment by institution and by type of commitment are shown as well. Other tables indicate parole and outpatient return status under current commitment by institution and type of commitment. The final table shows type of commitment by institution. 11 tables, 1 chart.
