DESCRIBES ACTIONS TAKEN BY A POLICE OFFICER TO CHECK FOR AUTO THEFTS AND BY THE AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE INDUSTRY AND AUTO MANUFACTURERS TO PROVIDE USEFUL INFORMATION.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR NOTES THE NEED FOR PATROL OFFICERS TO RECOGNIZE SUSPICIOUS SITUATIONS SUCH AS BROKEN VENT WINDOWS OR DIRTY LICENSE PLATES ON CLEAN CARS. HE ALSO ADVISES CHECKING VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS IN CASES WHERE THE VEHICLE OR OPERATOR DOES NOT COINCIDE WITH THE REGISTERED CAR OR OWNER. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE EFFORTS OF THE AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE INDUSTRY AND THE NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE THEFT BUREAU TO CUT DOWN ON AUTO THEFTS AND TO INCREASE RECOVERIES OF STOLEN VEHICLES. STEPS TAKEN BY THESE GROUPS INCLUDE FACTORY INSTALLATION OF ANTI-THEFT DEVICES, MAINTENANCE OF FILES WHICH FOLLOW A CAR FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO CURRENT REGISTRATION, AND DISTRIBUTION OF MANUALS TO POLICE DEPARTMENTS WHICH CONTAIN INVALUABLE REGISTRATION AND LICENSE PLATE INFORMATION.
