THE 1979 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE NORTHUMBRIA POLICE, GREAT BRITAIN, DESCRIBES THE INTERNAL ORGANIZATION AND ACTIVITIES OF A LOCAL CONSTABULARY, INCLUDING STATISTICS ON CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION OF THE REPORT IS DEVOTED TO THE ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANIZATION OF THE NORTHUMBRIA POLICE, WITH SEPARATE HEADINGS FOR RESEARCH AND PLANNING, A COMPUTER PROJECT, AND THE PROGRESS OF FEMALE POLICE OFFICERS. THE SECOND CHAPTER DEALS WITH PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING. OF SPECIAL INTEREST IS THE SECTION ON CRIME, DESCRIBING SEVERAL CASES OF HOMICIDE (SOME OF THEM INVOLVING MULTIPLE SLAYINGS), ALL OF THEM SOLVED. THE OVERALL DETECTION RATE FOR CRIMES COMMITTED WITHIN THE NORTHUMBRIA POLICE JURISDICTION WAS 52.5 PER CENT, COMPARED TO 51.2 PER CENT IN 1978. SUBSEQUENT CHAPTERS DEAL WITH THE TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES AND SPECIAL OPERATIONS (INCLUDING SUPPORT PATROLS, COMMUNICATIONS, MOUNTED AND DOG SECTIONS, SCIENTIFIC AIDS, AND MARINE SUBDIVISION); COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND COMMUNITY-POLICE RELATIONS PROGRAMS (E.G., SPECIAL LIAISON ACTIVITIES WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS AND SENIOR CITIZENS, AND PREVENTION AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN CONNECTION WITH CHILD ABUSE). THE LAST THREE SECTIONS COVER ACCOMMODATION AND POLICE PERSONNEL WELFARE AND RECREATION; LICENSING; AND MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. STATISTICS, GRAPHS, AND TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED IN THE TEXT AS WELL AS IN SEPARATE APPENDIXES.
