THIS SET OF TAPED PROCEEDINGS FROM A CONFERENCE ON CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT PRESENTS INFORMATION ON THE RECOGNITION, REPORTING, AND TREATMENT OF CASES OF ABUSE.
Abstract
THE TERM EXCEPTIONAL CHILD IS USED TO DESCRIBE A CHILD WHO IS ABUSED OR NEGLECTED. THE TOPICS ADDRESSED BY THIS CONFERENCE FOLLOW A NATURAL SEQUENCE, BEGINNING WITH SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NEGLECT AND SEXUAL ABUSE IN SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. SUBSEQUENTLY, PROCEDURES FOR PROFESSIONALS TO TAKE WHEN THEY SUSPECT A CASE OF CHILD BATTERING AND THE COSTS OF REPORTING AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT REPORTING ABUSE ARE EXAMINED, ALONG WITH THE TREATMENT MODALITIES, PREVENTION METHODS, AND MODEL PROGRAMS FOR SERVICE DELIVERY. CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED PROFESSIONALS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS IN ORDER TO UNDERSCORE THE NEED FOR MULTIPLE INTERVENTIONS FROM THE MEDICAL AND LEGAL PROFESSIONS, EDUCATORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, AND THE COMMUNITY. IT IS ARGUED THAT THESE PROFESSIONALS MUST BECOME ADVOCATES, SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER IN INITIATING PROTECTIVE SYSTEMS ON BEHALF OF EVERY CHILD IN PERIL. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--BAC)
