THIS BOOK IS A COMPILATION OF PAPERS SELECTED FROM THOSE GIVEN AT THE 1972 AND 1974 CHILDREN'S ADVOCATES, INC., NEW ENGLAND CHILD ABUSE SYMPOSIA, PLUS ADDITIONAL MATERIAL WRITTEN SPECIFICALLY FOR THE BOOK.
Abstract
REPRESENTING THE THINKING AND EXPERIENCE OF PEOPLE FROM THE MEDICAL, PSYCHIATRIC, SOCIAL WORK, LEGAL, AND LAY COMMUNITIES, THESE 26 PAPERS DESCRIBE A POSITIVE APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM, VIEWING CHILD ABUSE AS A SYMPTOM OF SERIOUS FAMILY PROBLEMS MERITING CAREFUL AND THOROUGH EVALUATION AND TREATMENT. SOCIAL WORKERS, DOCTORS, PSYCHIATRISTS, NURSES, PROBATION OFFICERS, PROJECT DIRECTORS, PARENTS, AND ATTORNEYS DISCUSS THE MULTIPLICITY OF CHILD ABUSE PROBLEMS AND ILLUSTRATE VARIOUS METHODS WHICH HAVE PROVED HELPFUL IN WORKING WITH FAMILIES. TOPICS DISCUSSED ARE PREVENTION CAUSES, INTERVENTION AND TREATMENT OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, EMOTIONAL REACTIONS TO CHILD ABUSE, LEGAL ISSUES, AND THE DYNAMICS OF SEPARATION AND PLACEMENT. ALSO INCLUDED ARE DISCUSSIONS OF RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS FOR PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS WHICH MAY ENHANCE FAMILY FUNCTIONING. (CHILDREN'S ADVOCATES, INC., CONSISTS OF A GROUP OF 23 HOSPITALS AND AGENCIES IN THE BOSTON AREA DESIGNED TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND FACILITATE AND COORDINATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SERVICES FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES).
