THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE EFFORTS OF AND PROCESSES WITH WHICH A NEW DIRECTOR OF A BOYS RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT UNIT MODIFIED THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE SERVICES FROM BASIC CHILD CARING ACTIVITIES INTO A SYSTEMATIC TREATMENT PROCESS.
Abstract
ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE UNIT WAS THAT THE EIGHT STAFF MEMBERS EACH HAD A DIFFERENT TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY. FOLLOWING A MAJOR STAFF SHAKEUP, THE AUTHOR'S CONTRIBUTION WAS TO IMPOSE A UNIFIED TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY ON THE NEW STAFF. THE INITIAL CONDITIONS AT THE UNIT ARE DESCRIBED. THE NEW TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY OF THE AUTHOR WAS TO DEVELOP AN ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE THAT WOULD PERMIT THE NEUROTIC ACTING-OUT YOUTHS WITHIN IT TO MAINTAIN THEIR PRIMARY DEFENSIVE POSTURE OF SUPER-ADEQUACY, AND AT THE SAME TIME OFFER A REALISTIC STRUCTURE THAT WOULD REFLECT TO THEM, IN A CONSTRUCTIVE MANNER, THEIR INABILITY TO COPE. --IN ENGLISH.
