Abstract
The book is organized to show the historical evolution of official responses to child maltreatment and is intended to help professionals who are involved with child protection issues. The author addresses criminal justice orientation as a professional response to child maltreatment and compares it to more liberal social work ideologies. In addition, the author focuses on the proverbial punishment-treatment dichotomy, the role of criminal justice agencies in child maltreatment, child maltreatment incidence studies and causal theories, and the extent of the child maltreatment problem.
