This article describes the development, delivery, and evaluation of a child protection training project for health professionals in Scotland.
Abstract
All health professionals in Scotland have a responsibility to follow standardized procedures and to report suspected cases of child abuse to appropriate authorities. There is evidence, however, that many health professionals fail to participate in the child protection process and related training. The author details her experience with delivering 4 hours of child protection training to 23 primary health care teams across Scotland during 2001. The rationale for the training is discussed, followed by a description of the development of the training curricula and the delivery of the program. The author focuses on how the learning outcomes were developed and how the success criteria for the project were established. The evaluation process following the first training session is described followed by a presentation of the learners’ feedback. Overall, the training was successful and the project as a whole was a model of effective interagency practice. Tables, figures, references
