The statutes that define the duties and responsibilities with respect to child protection services in New York State were enacted by Chapter 1039 (the Social Services Law) of the Laws of 1973.
Abstract
Sec. 413 on reporting defines mandated reporters of suspected abuse or maltreatment and provides guidelines for oral and written reports. Sec. 417 authorizes certain professionals to take protective custody of a child when there is imminent danger to life or health. Sec. 422 covers some of the functions and standards of the State's central register. Sec. 422.4 provides for strict confidentiality of child protective services records. Additional sections mandate the establishment of child protective services and outline their functions and responsibilities. Institutional abuse reporting and screening of child care employees are covered in recent amendments. 29 references.
