This manual presents a 30-hour training program for school personnel, parents, and other professionals in the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse.
Abstract
The training has four segments: (1) introduction to child abuse and neglect, (2) the problem of child sexual abuse, (3) responding to child sexual abuse, and (4) preventing child sexual abuse. A participant self-evaluation exercise enables trainees to determine their present knowledge and performance compared with training objectives. A questionnaire measures trainees' attitudes toward their ability to assist a sexually abused child, and toward the victim, the cooperating agencies, the offender, and the nonoffending spouse. Legal definitions of sex crimes in Washington State are presented, and indicators of child abuse are discussed. The effects of child abuse on the victim are described, and procedures for reporting the victim are described, and procedures for reporting abuse are suggested. Typical characteristics of the victimized family -- the female victim, father offender, nonoffending spouse, and other family members -- are discussed. Training activities for each of the four segments are listed, including lectures, lecturettes, situational exercises, films, and discussions. Kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and high school sexual abuse prevention curriculums are provided. A 35-item annotated bibliography and a glossary are included.
