This discussion guide accompanies a video that explains the medical examination process for alleged victims in child sexual abuse cases.
Abstract
The video is shown at the beginning of a training session in order to introduce the basic procedures of the medical exam. This discussion guide provides additional information and outlines training objectives, provides handouts, suggests discussion points, and presents case examples. The discussion guide assumes that training sessions will include individuals from both law enforcement and the Department of Social Services (DSS). Responsibilities in child sexual abuse cases are outlined for law enforcement, DSS, and the medical professional responsible for the medical examination of the alleged victim. Questions are posed for the trainee regarding the purpose of the medical exam. Background information and discussion questions address the scheduling of the exam. Procedures for exams in acute and chronic cases are discussed. Acute sexual child abuse is defined as an incident that has occurred within the past 72 hours. Chronic abuse is ongoing abuse that has occurred prior to the 72-hour window. Another section of the discussion guide focuses on "understanding the medical report." Case studies are provided in order to test participants' ability to apply concepts from the training. Trainees must decide how they are to proceed in each case scenario. 4 references
