Six videos and a teacher's resource book constitute the materials of a course for parents, teachers, and kindergarten and elementary school students on child sexual abuse prevention.
Abstract
Each of the three videos for students teaches them to recognize actual or attempted sexual abuse and what to do about it. The videos are for students in grades kindergarten through first grade, second through fourth grades, and grades five and six. The student videos use Chester the cat to teach children about the "uncomfortable" feelings and touch that are the warning signs of sexual abuse. Students will learn that their bodies are their own, and they can decide who touches them and how. They will be taught how to leave an uncomfortable situation, how to tell someone "no," and how to tell someone what has happened until someone believes them and helps them. The two videos for teachers instruct them in how to recognize and report suspected sexual abuse. The one video for parents provides basic information on the sexual abuse of children and teaches them the concepts and techniques for talking with their children about sexual abuse. Parents also learn how to follow up the school program with their children. The resource book for teachers instructs them in course objectives and in how to conduct follow-up discussions for each video.
