INCLUDED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE A REVIEW OF THE THEORIES OF CHILD ABUSE CAUSATION, A DISCUSSION OF FACTORS WHICH MAY PREDISPOSE PERSONS TO CHILD ABUSE, AND A DESCRIPTION OF A MULTIDISCIPLINARY CHILD ABUSE INTERVENTION APPROACH.
Abstract
AMONG THE THEORETICAL CAUSES OF CHILD ABUSE DISCUSSED ARE PARENTAL INABILITY TO DEAL WITH FRUSTRATION-AGGRESSION, PARENTAL FEELINGS OF INADEQUACY, AND INADEQUATE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES OF PARENTS. THE PREDISPOSING FACTORS TO CHILD ABUSE MAY INCLUDE POOR MARITAL RELATIONS, BEHAVIOR OF THE ABUSED CHILD, AND AGGRAVATING CIRCUMSTANCES PRECEDING THE ATTACK. THE AUTHOR NOTES THAT EFFECTIVE CHILD TRAUMA INTERVENTION MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING GOALS: 1) IDENTIFICATION OF HIGH-RISK PARENTS; 2) INTERVENTION TO REDUCE THE RISK OF PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE BY SUCH PARENTS; 3) REHABILITATION; AND 4) AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR PROFESSIONALS AND FOR CITIZENS. A NUMBER OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF A MULTIDISCIPLINARY COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM OF CHILD ABUSE INTERVENTION ARE THEN OFFERED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
