This report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services presents information on the performance of States in seven categories related to child welfare.
Abstract
Major findings from the Child Welfare Outcomes report for 2003-2006 include: in 2006, almost 890,000 children were confirmed to be victims of maltreatment; the race/ethnicity of child victims varied across States, and in many States, the percentage of minority child victims was disproportionate to the percentage of these children in the State; in FY 2006, approximately 512,000 children were in foster care across the country; and the race/ethnicity of children in foster care varied across States, and in many States, the percentage of minority children in foster care was disproportionate to the percentage of these children in the State. This report is divided into six chapters that present data and analyses on the performance of States in seven outcome categories related to child welfare: reduce recurrence of child abuse and/or neglect; reduce the incidence of child abuse and/or neglect in foster care; increase permanency for children in foster care; reduce time in foster care to reunification without increasing reentry; reduce time in foster care to adoption; increase placement stability; and reduce placement of young children in group homes or institutions. This information provides insight into where individual States are in making their greatest improvements in child welfare and where they face continued challenges. Tables and appendixes
