A PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION OF 2 BOYS WITH ABNORMAL XYY CHROMOSOME COMPLEMENTS IS PRESENTED IN THIS DANISH STUDY, ALONG WITH A RETROSPECTIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE CHILDHOOD AND EARLY ADOLESCENCE OF 20 ADULT XYY PATIENTS.
Abstract
THE 22 XYY MALE PATIENTS, RANGING IN AGE AT THE TIME OF DIAGNOSIS FROM 6 TO 58 YEARS, WERE EXAMINED AT THE CYTOGENIC LABORATORY OF ARHUS STATE HOSPITAL PRIOR TO NOVEMBER OF 1970. CHROMOSOME EXAMINATIONS WERE MADE ON 48-HOUR LEUCOCYTE CULTURES; NO FEWER THAN 30 CELLS WERE COUNTED AND 15 ANALYZED. PERTINENT CLINICAL DATA WERE COMPILED AND TABULATED, IN ADDITION TO INFORMATION CULLED FROM INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT TESTS AND SCHOOL AND POLICE RECORDS. A COMPARISON WITH 42 CONTROLS MATCHED FOR BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS INDICATED THAT TRUANCY, VAGABONDAGE, IMPULSIVENESS, AND DIFFICULTIES IN SCHOOL WERE, ALONG WITH PROBLEMS IN ESTABLISHING CONTACT WITH PEOPLE, MORE FREQUENT AMONG PATIENTS WITH 47,XYY. BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS, ADMISSION TO PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS, CRIMINALITY, AND MINOR ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC ABERRATIONS WERE FOUND MORE FREQUENTLY AMONG THE XYY MALES. MEASUREMENTS OF STATURE AND WEIGHT INDICATED THAT XYY BOYS ARE COMPARATIVELY TALL BUT HAVE A NORMAL WEIGHT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A COMBINATION OF 47,XYY AND INFANTILE AUTISM IN ONE OF THE BOYS WAS PROBABLY COINCIDENTAL. THE CASE HISTORIES OF EIGHT PATIENTS WITH RECORDS OF PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALIZATION IN CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE ARE INCLUDED, AS ARE TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES. (KBL)
