These 12 papers describe the rapid increase in serious physical violence in the United States and examine its impact on children's physical, psychological, and social development.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the patterns and duration of children's exposure to violence, the factors that increase the exposure of some children within a community, and the factors that protect other children. Additional papers discuss the need for remedial action to protect children, the influences of television and other sources, the impact of child sexual abuse on psychological development in childhood and adolescence as well as adulthood, and the impact of community violence on children. Other papers explore the factors accounting for the resiliency of children faced with severe adversity and the experiences of a clinician involved with children and adolescents.
