This report presents data on juvenile residential programs and group homes operating on February 1, 1983, and on juvenile residents in those facilities.
Abstract
Data were obtained through questionnaires mailed to facilities throughout the United States that housed more than three residents, 50 percent of whom were juveniles, and which had at least 1 percent of their average daily population composed of offenders. Juvenile detention centers operating as part of an adult jail were excluded, as were nonresidential facilities, facilities exclusively for drug/alcohol abusers or nonoffenders, and Federal juvenile correctional facilities. Data pertaining to facilities present the number of juveniles and facilities by facility type and facility environment, 1983; design capacity and occupancy, 1982; resident to staff ratios by employment status and staff function, 1979 and 1983; expenditures, 1982; and average per day and per placement operating costs, 1982. Data on juvenile residents include average daily population, population movement, and 1-day counts, 1979 and 1983; demographic characteristics and adjudication status, 1979 and 1983; average daily population and confinement rate by State, 1982; number of juveniles by reason held, 1983; and average lengths of stay by facility type. Narrative summary and 12 tables.
