THIS REPORT PRESENTS PRELIMINARY FINDINGS FROM THE 1975 CENSUS OF JUVENILE DETENTION AND CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES AND PROVIDES COMPARISONS OF 1974 AND 1975 DATA.
Abstract
THIS IS THE FOURTH IN A SERIES OF SURVEYS OF FACILITIES OPERATED BY STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE SECOND CANVASS OF PRIVATELY OPERATED ONES. SIX TYPES OF FACILITIES WERE SURVEYED: DETENTION CENTERS; SHELTERS; RECEPTION OR DIAGNOSTIC CENTERS; TRAINING SCHOOLS; RANCHES, FORESTRY CAMPS, AND FARMS; AND HALFWAY HOUSES AND GROUP HOMES. THE REPORT PROVIDES COMPARISONS WITH 1974 AND 1975 DATA ON THE NUMBER OF FACILITIES AND JUVENILES HELD, THE DETENTION STATUS OF JUVENILES, STAFFING, AND EXPENDITURES, FOR BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FACILITIES IN EACH STATE. SOME COMPARISONS WITH 1971 AND 1973 DATA ARE MADE ALSO. THE FINAL REPORT WILL PROVIDE GREATER DETAIL AND ADDITIONAL DATA VARIABLES SUCH AS LENGTH OF STAY, AGE RANGES OF PERSONS HELD, AND ADMISSIONS AND DEPARTURES DURING THE YEAR. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
