This manual presents guidelines for organizing an advocacy group, gathering information, and taking action designed to promote juvenile justice policies that move beyond punitive rhetoric to protect the public while investing in programs the improve the lives of children and families.
Abstract
The introduction notes that many youth become involved in the juvenile justice system because they did not receive services or opportunities that would ensure successful outcomes. In addition, many youth in the juvenile justice system do not receive the supervision and services they need and the opportunity to develop skills for living productive lives. The guidelines describe how to form and operate an advocacy group, how to conduct interviews with leaders of public and private agencies and elected officials, and the specific questions to ask each agency. They also explain how to analyze findings, issue a report, hold a public forum, receive media coverage, and advocate for legislation.
