Abstract
The book points to the evolution of a police and civil law concept in Britain in the 1980s and details the common law and statutory status and responsibilities of British police. Procedures for bringing misconduct complaints against the police are discussed and specific kinds of actionable police misconduct such as tort actions for assault and battery, unlawful detention, arrest, trespass, search and seizure, and surveillance are identified. Damages and remedies available for abuses of police power are discussed as are judicial review of police decisions and the relevance of such international agreements as the European Convention on Human Rights.
