Focusing on the causes, nature, prevention, and control of civil disorders and case examples from cities throughout the United States, these 65 papers were presented at the Police Foundation National Conference in 1993.
Abstract
Individual papers examine factors related to civil disorders, the roles of social conditions and race relations, various models and approaches to planning responses to civil disturbances, the roles of mayors and governors in emergency management, and specific preparations for civil disorders. Additional papers focus on the uses of community policing and problem-oriented policing in preventing civil disturbances, prevention strategies among gang members, the role of Federal agencies and law enforcement personnel in responding to disorders, efforts to improve police-community relations in individual cities, and the responsibility of the media. Other papers discuss the future of policing in urban areas and the work of the National Center for the Study of Police and Civil Disorder. Photographs
