Abstract

The authors advise that today, more than in the past, law enforcement agencies, intelligence collection agencies, and military special operations forces must have the ability to record still photographs and moving video images from long distances during the day and at night. In addition, they must be able to clandestinely photograph and film subjects as close as a few meters. There are also occasions when photographic surveillance must be conducted for long periods. Although the book does not contain any currently classified information, some of the information provided most likely would be classified if a government-funded research project had developed it. The term "manual photography," as used in this book, refers to manually operated photographic equipment, whether handheld or mounted to a tripod or some other support system. The techniques apply whether or not the operator touches the camera directly or uses a remote device. This book supplements existing training materials and improves the photographic skills of the reader in performing manual clandestine photography. The ultra-long-range night-vision photography methods described in this book were developed by the authors and only appear in this text. Esoteric techniques are described for photographing recognizable human and vehicle plate images from over a mile away during day-time or night-time. The book is intended for use by anyone in law enforcement, military operations, and private investigations. It is equally useful for those responsible for conducting, detecting, or thwarting manual clandestine photography. The language used and numerous illustrations provided make this book suitable for all photographers regardless of skill level. References, numerous illustrative photos, and a subject index
