THIS ARTICLE PROVIDES THE READER WITH AN OVERVIEW OF HOW A COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES HAS BEEN DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED IN COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
Abstract
IN 1973, CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL IN COOK COUNTY BEGAN TO BENEFIT FROM TRAINING PROGRAMS OFFERED BY THE COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE TRAINING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SECTION. A NEEDS ASSESSMENT CONDUCTED IN THE COURT SERVICES DEPARTMENT OF THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE REVEALED THAT THE DEPUTIES WERE IN NEED OF TRAINING IN THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AND DUTIES, AND IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS. THE TRAINING PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR THE DEPUTIES THEREFORE INCLUDED ONE NINE-HOUR MODULE WITH A FOCUS ON HUMAN RELATIONS AND ANOTHER FOUR-HOUR MODULE ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS, ESPECIALLY VERBAL AND NONVERBAL SKILLS. THE SPECIFIC COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS PRACTICED WERE LISTENING TECHNIQUES, PARAPHRASING AND FEEDBACK TECHNIQUES, NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND TONE OF VOICE TECHNIQUES....DMC
