This paper describes a general problem-solving approach to the development and implementation of violence prevention and intervention strategies within the classroom.
Abstract
Effective prevention in the classroom requires a focus on the teacher's skills and supports. Teachers need both preservice and in-service training to develop and improve teaching, communication, classroom management, and problem-solving skills. Classroom management includes room arrangement, classroom rules, positive and negative consequences, cooperative learning strategies, and access to supports within the building. Addressing and intervening with aggressive behavior through a problem-solving approach that applies strategies specific to the individual who is exhibiting aggressive behavior. Interventions should rest on analysis of the precipitants of the aggressive behavior; the setting events; the aggressive behavior itself; the strengths and limitations of the aggressive individual; the knowledge, skills, resources, and supports of the persons implementing the intervention; and the costs. It is also important to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs. 63 references
