A STATISTICAL PROFILE OF RESIDENTS OF MASSACHUSETTS DRUG CONTRACT HOUSES DURING 1977-78 IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE DRUG CONTRACT HOUSES REHABILITATE DRUG-DEPENDENT PERSONS BY PROVIDING A THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT. THE STATISTICAL PROFILE IS THE FIRST COMPONENT OF A 3-PART EVALUATION OF 88 RESIDENTS RELEASED FROM DRUG CONTRACT HOUSES IN 1977 AND 1978, THE FIRST 2 YEARS OF THE PROGRAM'S OPERATION. STATISTICS COVER MOVEMENT CLIENTS IN AND OUT OF THE DRUG HOUSES, TERMINATION OF PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, AND BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM COMPLETERS AND NONCOMPLETERS. A BRIEF NARRATIVE SUMMARY NOTES THAT SEVERAL VARIABLES APPEAR TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PROGRAM COMPLETERS AND NONCOMPLETERS. AMONG THESE ARE NUMBER OF FURLOUGHS, LAST GRADE COMPLETED, NUMBER OF COURT APPEARANCES, NUMBER OF JUVENILE INCARCERATIONS, AND AGE AT PRERELEASE PLACEMENT. IT IS ALSO NOTED THAT THE PROGRAM COMPLETION RATE WAS 44 PERCENT FOR 1977 AND 42 PERCENT FOR 1978. ONLY 12 PERCENT OF 1977 RELEASEES AND 11 PERCENT OF 1978 RELEASEES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY COMMITTED FOR DRUG OFFENSES--PERCENTAGES COMPARABLE TO THOSE FOUND IN THE GENERAL POPULATION. OTHER EVALUATION COMPONENTS WILL COMPARE CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPLETERS AND NONCOMPLETERS IN DETAIL, AND ANALYZE 1-YEAR RECIDIVISM DATA. TABLES ARE PROVIDED.
