THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE SUCCESSFUL FIRE/PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER PROGRAMS IN A NUMBER OF NEW JERSEY CITIES AND ANALYZES THE FACTORS THAT LED TO THE SUCCESS OF THESE PROGRAMS.
Abstract
IN THESE PROGRAMS, FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BOTH FIREFIGHTING AND PUBLIC SAFETY FIRE/POLICE PATROL. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN A NUMBER OF NEW JERSEY CITIES, WITH FIRE DEPARTMENTS FINDING THAT THE FIRE/POLICE PATROL OFFICERS HAVE GREATER CONTACT WITH THE PUBLIC, MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, AND CONTINUED HIGH LEVELS OF FIRE FIGHTING EFFECTIVENESS. THE OBJECTIONS OF SOME OFFICIALS TO THESE PROGRAMS ARE NOTED. AN EXAMPLE OF A FIRE/POLICE PROGRAM WHICH FAILED IS ALSO INCLUDED TO HIGHLIGHT THE FACTORS WHICH ARE IMPORTANT TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS TYPE OF PROGRAM....DMC
