From the perspective of clinical criminology, these papers examine crime rates, patterns, and causes for various juvenile and adult offenses and discuss issues in offender assessment, judicial processing, and treatment.
Abstract
Following discussions of the current status of clinical criminology and the rehabilitative ideal, seven papers examine violence and violent crime issues including the assessment of dangerousness, the treatment of violent behavior, the dynamics of child abuse, the relationship between amnesia and violent crime, and the factors (personal, social, and pharmacological) intervening in possible relationships between violent crime and substance abuse. Forensic characteristics of juvenile and adult arsonists also are delineated and discussed as they relate to prognosis and treatment. Development of a psychopathy checklist is described, and management of violence in a maximum security hospital is discussed. Four papers dealing with sex offenders examine characteristics of father-daughter incest; paraphilia; and the profiling, assessment, and treatment of sex offenders. Subsequent papers examine law enforcement, social, criminal justice, and clinical issues as they relate to four offender groups: juvenile delinquents, female offenders, mentally handicapped offenders, and shoplifters.
