In offering guidance on areas of medical practice where the doctor gathers evidence from or about living persons that may be presented in court, this book is designed to provide lawyers, police officers, and social workers with clear explanations of topics affecting their clinical forensic medicine work.
Abstract
The text includes the work of 29 experienced authors who have a close and practical interest in clinical forensic medicine. Contributors look at medicolegal obligations, legal systems and the police, facilities for the examination of medical evidence, and prisoners and detainees. They also review clinical problems associated with alcohol and drugs, clinical and legal aspects of sudden natural death, suicide, suspicious death, accidents and occupational disease, and wounds. Finally, the contributors discuss nonaccidental injury to children, child sexual abuse, sexual offenses against adults, the medicolegal significance of pregnancy, forensic science, odontology and identification, and occupational health. Appendixes contain a table of relevant statutes and statutory instruments in the United Kingdom, a joint statement of the British Paediatric Society and the Association of Police Surgeons, information on ages of legal significance, and outline figures for recording injury.
