This study classifies 72 juveniles charged with homicide in Michigan from 1977 through 1985 according to their mental states and circumstances of the offenses.
Abstract
The study included youth as old as 18, and the offenses covered first or second degree murder but not deaths attributed to accident or self-defense. The three classifications of offenders are those who were psychotic at the time of the offense, those who committed homicide in association with another crime, and those who committed homicide in association with an interpersonal conflict with the victim. Information upon which the classifications were made came from police reports that included review of the crime scene, witnesses' accounts, defendants' statements at the time of arrest, and defendants' accounts of the offenses during forensic evaluations conducted by forensic clinicians. A sample of cases are reviewed under each classification. The format for presenting each case covers forensic evaluation, history, and forensic outcome. 5 references.
