Abstract
This book presents a fundamental resource on the neurobiology, physiology, epidemiology, history, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cocaine abuse. The comorbidity of cocaine abuse and eating disorders, depression, anxiety, hypertension, and various other disorders is discussed in detail. Finally, presented are new strategies tailored to specific patient groups aimed at confronting the ever-changing face of drug abuse. Chapter 1 examines prevention; the persistence of substance abuse; and the evolution of cocaine trafficking. Chapter 2 explores the history of cocaine from the 19th century to the 1980s. Chapter 3 analyses the neurobiology of cocaine, such as stimulant reinforcement and reward, withdrawal, drug memory, varying routes of administration, rewarding effects of other drugs, and non-pharmacological factors. Chapter 4 describes the clinical manifestations of cocaine abuse, such as acute and chronic effects and medical complications of cocaine abuse. Chapter 5 provides information of the challenges of available outpatient treatment. Chapter 6 discusses the qualities of inpatient treatment, relapse prevention, and outcome treatment. Chapter 7 explores pharmacological treatments for cocaine craving. Chapter 8 focuses on drug testing. Chapter 9 examines the relationship between eating disorders and substance abuse. Chapter 10 addresses substance abuse among physicians, the elderly, and adolescents. Index
