A survey of correctional institutions across the country revealed that 35 institutions in 23 systems house both men and women inmates who often share food, recreation, education, and job services.
Abstract
Although most (13) of the coed prisons are minimum security, 12 are medium security and 3 have both minimum and medium security levels. Respondents named several benefits of the coed system including cost effectiveness, normalized environment, expanded programming for women, greater staffing flexibility, and alleviated overcrowding at male facilities. Some of the drawbacks mentioned were illicit inmate relationships, supervisory and disciplinary problems, staff security coverage, development of "separate but equal" programming, disproportionate ratio of male to female inmates, and staff attitudes. 1 table
