CROSS NATIONAL DATA AND ANALYSES ARE USED TO EXPLORE REGIME COERCIVENESS, LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIOECONOMIC CHANGE.
Abstract
MODERN, TRANSITIONAL AND TRADITIONAL SOCIETIES ARE COMPARED ON THE BASIS OF DEGREE OF CHANGE AND EXTENT TO WHICH POLITICAL AND SOCIAL FREEDOMS WERE PRESENT. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY SHOW THAT COERCIVENESS IS STRONGLY INDICATED, IF NOT NECESSARY, IN ORDER FOR MODERNIZATION TO OCCUR. HOWEVER, THE RELATION BETWEEN COERCIVENESS AND RATE OF SOCIOECONOMIC CHANGE MAY BE QUESTIONED. IT IS OPEN TO THE INTERPRETATION THAT CHANGE RATE IS DETERMINED, NOT BY COERCIVENESS OF REGIME, BUT BY LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT. CORRECTED FOR THIS DEPENDENCE ON LEVEL OF MODERNITY, NO RELATIONSHIP IS APPARENT BETWEEN COERCIVENESS AND RATE OF CHANGE.
