Abstract
Research findings articles covering the years 1995 to 2001 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) are presented focusing on women and gender differences issues including: (1) drug and alcohol abuse; (2) women in treatment; (3) genetics and vulnerability to drug abuse; (4) ethnic identification and cultural ties in the prevention of drug abuse; (5) pregnant drug users; (6) infectious diseases and drug abuse; (7) men and women in drug abuse treatment; (8) exploring the role of child abuse in later drug abuse; (9) AIDS research; (10) effectiveness of drug abuse treatment; (11) how gender affects relationships between drug abuse and psychiatric disorders; (12) women’s dependence on smoking; (13) mental health problems of addicted mothers and the links to infant care and development; (14) effects of cocaine on men and women; and (15) how early childhood behavior and temperament predict later substance use.
