Abstract
Journals and books published between 1958 and 1979 were major sources for the bibliography; the editors particularly focused on empirical research involving specific collective actions and disorders which had the potential for violence. Certain types of confrontations, including prison riots, violence in secondary schools, terrorism, and domestic assault, were excluded from this bibliography. The entries can be classified into five categories: overview, historical and cross-national, riots and civil disorders, college and university social movements, and other social movements and collective action. The latter category encompasses black activism, poor peoples' movements, peace movements, feminism and women's liberation, labor conflicts, environment movements, conflicts around racial segregation, militancy in secondary schools, other youth movement activities, right-wing crusades, and miscellaneous protest activities. Each annotation is classified according to the general approach used in the article or book and its predominant methodology. The detailed annotations are followed by a comment in which the relevance of the material for various audiences is assessed.
