The College Library and Research Center (CLRC) is an innovative research library and computer center created to round out the educational experience of inmates at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility.
Abstract
The CLRC, located in the facility's academic school building, is supported by grants from the National Committee on the Self-Development of People and the Women's Opportunity Giving Fund, both sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA). Autonomously governed by an inmate board of directors, the CLRC is not under the direct control of the institutional administration or either of the two colleges which offer classes to inmates. In the CLRC, inmate students research and write term papers, acquire familiarity and competence with computer software, and conduct statistical analyses necessary for graduate-level quantitative research. The CLRC environment promotes the development of self-reliant coping skills, feelings of self-efficacy, and social cooperation. 25 references
