SELECTED PAPERS ARE PROVIDED ON RESEARCH REGARDING SUSPECTED CORRELATES AND DETERMINANTS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. PSYCHOLOGICAL, BIOLOGICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SEEN AS CONTRIBUTORY TO CRIME ARE EXPLORED.
Abstract
DETAILS ARE PROVIDED OF A PORTION OF THE FINDINGS OF THE YOUTH IN TRANSITION PROJECT CONDUCTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN'S INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH IN AN EFFORT TO LINK EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT AND DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR. INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN DRUG USE AND CRIME ARE DISCUSSED IN LIGHT OF OBSERVATIONS CULLED FROM PREVIOUS RESEARCH AND ORIGINAL RESEARCH AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY. AN OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE ON BEHAVIORAL AND PSYCHOPHYSICAL EFFECTS OF CROWDING ON MAMMALS, ESPECIALLY HUMAN BEINGS IS PROVIDED, ALONG WITH THE RESULTS OF A FIELD STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF PRISON OVERCROWDING ON INMATES. THE INCIDENCE OF PSYCHOPATHY IN CRIMINAL AND PRISON POPULATIONS IS EXAMINED IN AN OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PSYCHOPATHIC MALADJUSTMENTS AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. THE ASSERTION THAT MOST OF THE VARIANCE IN CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR IS ASCRIBABLE TO GENETIC FACTORS IS EVALUATED, ALONG WITH AN ILLUSTRATIVE INTERACTION THEORY OF THE BIOSOCIAL BASES OF CRIMINALITY. THE RESULTS OF AN EFFORT TO CHART THE NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DIMENSIONS OF THE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR OF 93 RECIDIVIST AGGRESSORS INCARCERATED AT MARYLAND'S PATUXENT INSTITUTION ARE PRESENTED. CITING EXPERIMENTAL AND CLINICAL EVIDENCE FROM HUMAN AND ANIMAL STUDIES, THE BASIC MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN BEHAVIOR CONTROL ARE REVIEWED TO DELINEATE A MODEL OF HUMAN AGGRESSION. A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK IS PROVIDED FOR THE COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ASSAULTIVE BEHAVIOR IN BLACK URBAN FAMILIES, AND SURVEY FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED FROM A PSYCHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL AFFECTION DEPRIVATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR. FINALLY, THE ARREST RECORDS AND DRINKING HABITS OF VIETNAM-ERA VETERANS ARE COMPARED IN AN EFFORT TO LINK ALCOHOL USE OR ABUSE WITH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR BY WAR VETERANS. REFERENCES AND TABULAR AND GRAPHIC DATA ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH PAPER. FOR SELECTED READINGS, SEE NCJ 53456-53465. (KBL)
